Finucane murder: time for the truth
by Democrat reporter
The Pat Finucane Centre has expressed disappointment at the British government’s latest refusal to stage a full public inquiey into the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane.
Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Paul Murphy, recently announced, following the conviction of Ken Barrett for the murder, that any inquiry could not be public, for the sake of ‘national security’.
The inquiry is to take place ‘under new legislation, which will be introduced shortly’.
Responding to Murphy’s statement, a Finucane Centre spokesman said:
“The fact that he has not announced a ‘public’ enquiry means that the Government probably does not intend to have a proper inquiry. “There is no need for new legislation to protect the public interest or national security because the current law caters for this. Special legislation when it isn't needed can only mean that rather than the truth emerging what will emerge is cover up and lies.”
